The title ‘But We Loved Her’ of Ursula Mayer’s exhibition is drawn from an April 17, 2013 photograph in The Independent, the day Margaret Thatcher was laid to rest. The London-based artist collected newspaper articles published after Thatcher’s death, programmatically positioning these four words at the forefront of her exhibition in Vienna. This phase of Mayer’s work probes the possibilities offered by neoliberal identity and the dynamics of consumer culture in a post-capitalist society, as well as their historical precursors. The exhibition features three films—’Gonda’, ‘Medea’ and ‘Cinesexuality’—alongside photographs, glass sculptures, fabric screens, collages, and neon installations. Each object is meticulously staged, framed, and lit, mirroring the cinematic quality of the films and transforming the gallery into a cohesive visual set.
